Conjunctions

 

Conjunctions adalah  kata-kata sambung seperti kata: and, or, but, then dan because:

They knocked down all the houses and they asked for donation.

How many students are there in the classroom now? Are there  3 or 7?

My shirt looks great but isn't very comfortable.

Ada juga yang dinamakan sebagai Coordinating Conjunction seperti: And, but, either ... or, neither ... nor, both ... and ...

Gunanya adalah untuk menghubungkan hal-hal yang memiliki kesamaan tata bahasa seperti kata, frase, klausa. Umumnya ada pada: and, or, but.

Which shoes do you like? The red or the blue ones?

You can eat these foods either hot or cold.

Neither Johny nor Andrew had been to France before. (Meaning: Johny hadn’t been to France before and Andrew hadn’t been to France before.)

Both you and I know what really happened. (You know and I know what happened.)

Beberapa Conjunction lainnya adalah: after, (al)though, as, before, if, since, that, until, when, whereas, while, once, so, as soon as, provided that, dan lazim disebut sebagai subordinating conjunction. Bila suatu klausa mengikuti conjunction ini, maka menjadi klausa subordinat, yang memerlukan klausa.utama agar bisa membuat kalimat lengkap.

[klausa subordinat]After we decide, [main clause]we should do it.

[klausa utama]Everyone like the tour [klausa subordinat]although no one brought any cameras!

[klausa subordinat]Before we have our breakfast, [klausa utama]we have to cook first.
